Locating TeV γ-ray Sources with Sub-Arcminute Precision: the Pointing Calibration of the HEGRA System of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes

چکیده
Stereoscopic viewing of TeV γ-ray air showers with systems of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) allows to reconstruct the origin of individual primary particles with an accuracy of 0.1◦ or better. The shower impact point can be determined within 15 meters. To actually achieve this resolution, the pointing of the telescopes of an IACT system needs to be controlled with high precision. For the HEGRA IACT system, a procedure to calibrate telescope pointing was established, using bright stars distributed over the sky as references. On the basis of these measurements, one determines parameters of a correction function which is valid for the complete hemisphere. After correction a pointing accuracy of 0.01◦ is achieved.

The HEGRA Experiment Status and Recent Results
A report is given on the status and recent results from the HEGRA imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACT) concerning Mrk 501 and GRS 1915+105 and on recent results from the HEGRA arrays concerning galactic and extragalactic γ-sources, counterparts of TeV Gamma-Ray-Bursts, cosmic ray anisotropies, energy spectrum and composition of primary cosmic rays. متن کاملScans of the TeV Gamma-Ray Sky with the HEGRA Sys- tem of Cherenkov Telescopes
Between 1997 and the end of the detector operation in fall 2002, about 5500 hours of observational data were recorded with the HEGRA system of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT). Besides dedicated scan observations of extended sky regions, a considerable fraction of the sky has been looked at as a side effect during the observations of selected source candidates. Altogether, more t...
متن کاملMonte Carlo studies on the sensitivity of the HEGRA imaging atmospheric Čerenkov telescope system in observations of extended γ-ray sources
In this paper, we present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of atmospheric showers induced by diffuse γ-rays as detected by the high-energy gamma-ray astronomy (HEGRA) system of five imaging atmospheric Čerenkov telescopes (IACTs). We have investigated the sensitivity of observations on extended γ-ray emission over the entire field of view of the instrument. We discuss a technique to searc...
متن کاملObservation of the giant radio galaxy M87 with the HEGRA Cherenkov telescopes
The giant radio galaxy M87, well studied from radio to X-ray energies, is located in the Virgo cluster of galaxies at a distance of 16 Mpc (redshift z 1⁄4 0:00436). M87 has been observed with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of five Cherenkov telescopes in the years 1998 and 1999 for more than 80 h. An excess of TeV c-rays on the 4r level has been found in the data corresponding to an integral flu...
متن کاملCharacteristics of the Multi-Telescope Coincidence Trigger of the HEGRA IACT System
The HEGRA–collaboration is operating a system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes to search for sources of TeV–γ–rays. Air showers are observed in stereoscopic mode with several telescopes simultaneously. To trigger the telescope system a versatile two–level trigger scheme has been implemented, which allows a significant reduction of the energy threshold with respect to single telescope...
